Shoes to look taller: sneakers, boots and lift shoes for men
Shoes make a man look taller in two ways: real height from a thicker sole or a lift built inside the shoe, and visual height from matching the shoe to the trousers so the leg reads longer. Check how many centimetres a shoe adds before you buy.
Real height: soles and lifts
A thick sole adds visible height. A lift or elevator shoe hides extra height inside, under the heel, so the shoe looks ordinary from outside. Where the maker lists it, Leumas gives the height added by the sole or by an internal lift in centimetres on the product page.
Lifts change your posture and the angle of the foot, so more height is not always more comfortable. Moderate heights are easier to wear all day.
Visual height: colour and line
Shoes in the same tone as your trousers continue the leg line. Strong contrast, such as white sneakers with black trousers, stops the eye at the ankle. Low-profile shoes with a slim toe also read as a longer foot and leg than chunky ones.
Boots
Chelsea and lace-up boots usually have a higher heel than sneakers, and the shaft hides under the trouser hem, so the leg appears to continue into the boot. Winter boots add sole height too; keep the trouser hem at the top of the boot with no break.
Getting the size right
Measure your foot from the heel to the longest toe and choose the size whose foot-length range includes it. A lift takes up room inside the shoe, so check the maker's guidance on whether to size up.
Questions
Do elevator shoes work?
- They add real height through a lift hidden inside the shoe. Check the listed height in centimetres; moderate lifts are more comfortable for all-day wear.
What sneakers make you look taller?
- Sneakers with a thicker sole, in a tone close to your trousers, with a slim profile.
Do boots make you taller?
- Most boots have a higher heel than sneakers, and a trouser hem over the shaft makes the leg read longer.
