Winter coats and parkas for short men: length, warmth and fit for Canadian winters
A short man's winter coat should end at the top of the thigh at most, with sleeves that reach the wrist over a knit and enough chest room for a mid-layer. For Canadian cold, choose a down or heavily padded hip-length puffer or a short parka over a knee-length coat cut for a taller man.
Coat length for a shorter man
Length is where winter coats go wrong. A parka designed to sit mid-thigh on a tall model can reach the knee on a man of 165 cm, and a knee-length overcoat can reach mid-calf. That cuts the leg line in half and makes walking in snow awkward.
Hip-length puffers and short parkas that end at the top of the thigh keep proportion and still cover the seat. Check the body length on the size chart against your height, not the model photo.
Fit over layers
A winter coat goes over a knit or hoodie, so it needs more chest room than a shirt: Leumas allows extra chest room in jackets, puffers and coats for exactly that reason. Size for the chest over your mid-layer, then check the length.
Measure sleeve reach (half the shoulder plus the sleeve) with the knit on. Sleeves should reach the wrist bone so a glove tucks under the cuff; on a bigger size they will cover the hand.
Warmth: what the labels mean
On Leumas, Warm means insulated, fleece-lined, wool-rich or heavyweight, and Very warm means down-filled or heavily padded, both taken from the maker's own listing. We don't print a temperature rating unless a piece has been worn and tested, because a rating guessed from a listing isn't reliable.
For the coldest Canadian days, a down puffer as the outer layer with a knit underneath is warmer and easier to manage indoors than one very heavy coat.
Rain and shoulder season
The same length rules apply to rain jackets and spring coats: end at the hip or top of the thigh, and check that the hood and sleeves are not graded for a taller frame.
Questions
How long should a winter coat be on a short man?
- Hip length to the top of the thigh. Longer coats graded for taller men often reach the knee on men under 170 cm.
Should I size up for a winter coat?
- Only for the chest, to fit a knit underneath. Sizing up also adds length and sleeve, so check those still fit your height.
Are puffers good for short men?
- Yes, in a hip-length or cropped cut. A long puffer adds bulk over the whole body; a short one keeps your proportions.
