Winter outfits for short men: layering for a Canadian winter

Layer in three: a fitted base, a knit or hoodie as the mid-layer, and a hip-length down or padded coat on top. Keep the layers in close colours, wear trousers with no break over boots, and avoid long coats that cut the leg in half.

The three layers

Outer layer: a down puffer or padded jacket for the coldest days, which keeps out wind and comes off indoors. Mid-layer: a knit or hoodie, the warmth you keep on inside. Trousers: denser cloth rather than heavy fleece, so heated offices and transit stay comfortable.

Each layer should fit in length on its own. A long hoodie under a short puffer hangs out below the hem and shortens the legs.

Keep the bulk in check

Bulk adds width, and width makes a shorter frame look shorter. Choose a mid-layer close to the body, and let the outer layer carry the volume.

Close colours from coat to trousers keep one vertical line even in a puffer: navy over charcoal, or black over dark grey.

Trousers and boots

Winter trousers should end at the top of the boot with no break, so fabric doesn't bunch over the shaft. A slight taper helps. Boots in the same tone as the trousers lengthen the leg, and many winter boots add a few centimetres of sole.

Outfit formulas

Commute: a black hip-length puffer, a charcoal knit, dark tapered trousers and black boots.

Weekend: a short parka worn open over a hoodie, straight jeans with no break, and boots.

Questions

How do short men layer without looking bulky?

Keep the base and mid-layers close-fitting, let only the coat carry volume, and keep the colours close so the outfit reads as one line.

What trousers should short men wear in winter?

Denser, tapered trousers that end at the top of the boot with no break. Heavy fleece-lined trousers are too warm indoors.
